Mary Catherine and Jay. I have so many fond memories of this day and everyone there. I met up with these two in Charlotte before the wedding to check out their reception venue and to talk about our plan for portrait locations near the church (funny story – the background in their first look is actually someone’s front yard!) I also was able to kick off this great weekend with everyone by photographing their rehearsal dinner the night before. It’s so wonderful when I feel like I already know some of the family members leading into the big day!
On the wedding day, I met up with the girls at the Iveys Hotel in Uptown where they were finishing getting ready. We knew there was a chance of rain, so we were thinking through a back-up plan for the first look, but decided to head on to the church with our umbrellas. Thankfully it was lightly drizzling on and off, and we were still able to do all of their portraits outside. It may not have been the sunny day we were expecting, but I loved the cloudy, romantic vibe of their first look portraits – and of course that they had their great pyrenees pup brought for a few pictures!
They incorporated so many unique details, like holding their parents’ wedding portraits, having a trolley to transport the bridal party, custom cocktail napkins with fun facts about the bride & groom, sitting down to eat their favorite foods before being introduced (and of course mac n’ cheese for Mary Catherine, her fave!) a pianist playing during cocktail hour, a polaroid guest book (which I always think is SO fun!) and a variety of desserts, including donuts, cakes, cheesecake, some from their favorite places in NC & GA.
To kick off the reception, they came down a spiral staircase and cut the cake, then led their guests into another room for a seated dinner and toasts. After about an hour, it was time to kick off the party! They led everyone into a third room where the band was waiting for them. I loved that they set aside intentional time to have a relaxed dinner, and to have speeches in a more intimate atmosphere that felt so special.
At the end of the night they rode off in a classic VW Van with cans tied to the back – cutest exit ever! So much love for the new Mr. & Mrs. Foster!
